Keith Jackson has questioned whether Philippe Clement is a “genius” for leaving Ianis Hagi and Danilo out of the Rangers Europa League squad this season.
The Gers are set to face Tottenham in the Europa League on Thursday and will be looking to continue their winning ways against arguably the toughest opposition they’ve faced this season.
Clement’s men are coming off the back of a four-game win streak, which includes results such as their 6-0 victory over Kilmarnock and a 4-1 demolition of Nice.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (10 December), Jackson shared his thoughts on former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou’s impending return with his current club to Ibrox.
“There might be Rangers fans that are quietly not too unhappy if [Ianis] Hagi and Danilo have to sit this one [game against Tottenham] out if it means that they’re fresh and ready to roll for the Cup final at Hampden [Park] on Sunday,” he said.
“By hook or by crook, they might just have landed lucky here. This is the great thing about Clement and the situation that Rangers are in now, you just genuinely haven’t got a clue what you’re going to get.
“You don’t know if he’s planned this, a genius that’s planned it or if he’s sort of bungled his way into it but you have got this scenario now where Spurs are down on their luck.”
Rangers might shock the footballing world and beat Tottenham
At the moment, Rangers fans seem quite happy with the way things are going for their team. While they remain third in the Scottish Premiership, the fact they’re eighth in the Europa League and find themselves in the final of the Scottish League Cup shows that are signs of progression to cling to amid the inconsistency this season.
Rangers’ Europa League form has been rather impressive. In the five games they’ve played, the Gers have won three, drawn one and lost one.
Hamza Igamane’s recent purple patch of form is also something that should be touched upon as, recently, the Morocco international seems to have really come into his own.
The former AS Far man has scored four goals in as many games over the last month or so and, at the moment, seems to be Clement’s preferred choice to lead the line.
Thursday’s tie against Spurs is one of the biggest challenges Clement’s men will face this season and if they manage to come away with any sort of points, that’d be something worth celebrating in itself.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement could make three changes to his starting XI against Tottenham.
