'Get Back In Your Box' - Keith Wyness hits out after Marinakis' Nottingham Forest ban

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has told the FA to “get back in their box” after banning Nottingham Forest chairman Evangelos Marinakis for five games.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the sanction is “ridiculous”.

Nottingham Forest were fined £750,000 by the FA last week (11 October) for an “attack on the integrity of a match official on an unparalleled scale” following a loss against Everton last season.

And in a new twist, Marinakis has been handed a five-game stadium ban for spitting on the floor as match officials walked past in the tunnel following the 1-0 defeat against Fulham last month (28 September).

Nuno Espirito Santo and Morgan Gibbs-White have been handed bans for their reactions to a red card in a 2-2 draw against Brighton in September.

Wyness hit out at the ban for Marinakis – and suggested he may feel like challenging the FA’s authority.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’m not a fan of the FA and their sanctioning brigade.

“I don’t think this is the right thing to do. Considering Marinakis’ fiery personality, I wouldn’t be surprised if he turned up at a game and just sees what they can do about it.

“This time, he may just decide to co-operate.

“I think with Forest eighth in the table, he may feel like flexing his muscles. I wouldn’t blame him.

“He’s doing what he feels is best.

“Five-game ban, I think it’s ridiculous. The FA have got to get back in their box with these punishments.”
