Stefan Borson: Chelsea fear crushing blow after £200m+ reveal

Chelsea could be forced to publish a set of accounts that are subject to change if the Premier League doesn’t approve some of their off-field deals before the end of December.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the west London club are currently losing more than £200million at the operating level.

Chelsea transferred ownership of their women’s team to a BlueCo company in June to help offset their losses for 2023-24, with the deal believed to be worth around £160million.

The London giants previously sold club hotels and part of their Cobham training ground in intra-company deals to avoid breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Chelsea could have made more transactions to avoid PSR breach

Borson suggested Chelsea could have made more transactions to help them avoid a PSR breach alongside the women’s team sale.

He told Football Insider: “I don’t think the women’s team sale would have been approved yet.

“There are all sorts of knock-on effects to that because Chelsea will be going through an audit process right now for the numbers for the end of June 2024.

“They will have to finalise their audit by 31 December.

“It’s possible and probably that, in the way they didn’t have final confirmation last year in respect of the hotel, that they won’t have final confirmation in respect of the women’s team and anything else they have done.

“We don’t know what other transactions Chelsea have done to try and meet PSR for 2023-24.

“We know that on an operating level, they are still losing more than £200million a year before player-transfer profits and other asset sales.

“But we don’t know what those other asset sales might be aside from the women’s team. We will have to see.

“It’s probable that they will get in a situation like last year where they put out a set of accounts that are effectively subject to change if the Premier League turn down certain things.”

In other news, 2023 signing is “unhappy” and could now push for shock Chelsea move.
