Jordan Pickford was the hero against Newcastle United as he saved an Anthony Gordon penalty to help Everton secure a point.
It was far from a classic at Goodison Park but there’s no doubt the atmosphere was loud as fans gave the former Toffees forward an earful throughout the clash.
Sean Dyche will have been frustrated when James Tarkowski hauled down Sandro Tonali to give away a blatant penalty.
It was the England number one to the rescue as Pickford kept out Gordon from the penalty spot to keep the scores level in Saturday’s (5 October) Premier League contest.
There were chances for both sides as the second half went on but after a scrappy 45 minutes, the referee blew for full time, meaning the points were shared.
Goodison News has ranked each player out of 10.
Jordan Pickford – 8
In what was undoubtedly the moment of the match, the Everton keeper showed his best with a superb, well-improvised penalty save. For supporters, the fact it was from Gordon will make it even sweeter. His general performance as well as the spot kick stop was also positive on the night.
James Garner – 6
The 23-year-old looked positive down the right-hand side both going forward and in a defensive sense. He would have hoped to get more crosses in for Dominic Calvert-Lewin which could have been a useful way to get through the Newcastle backline.
James Tarkowski – 3
No one inside Goodison or even watching at home can understand what complaints the defender can have over a penalty being given against him. The Englishman dragged Tonali down to the ground for no reason leaving VAR no choice. He was lucky that Pickford bailed him out but that doesn’t excuse him after nearly giving a penalty away against Crystal Palace as well.
Michael Keane – 6
If Tarkowski was rash inside the area, Keane bailed him out on several occasions with a few big challenges, particularly in the first half. It was a good showing with the ball at his feet for the 31-year-old and a clean sheet only makes his performance better.
Ashley Young – 5
The 39-year-old put in a gritty performance at full back and did well up against Jacob Murphy and then Miguel Almiron on the wing for the away side. A solid player at Goodison who did what Dyche would have wanted throughout, but nothing more.
Abdoulaye Doucoure – 6
This game could have been so different if the midfielder had just held his run slightly and got himself on the scoresheet. His ‘housery’ was on top form as he celebrated in front of Gordon but that doesn’t boost his performance. The Mali international was one of the better Toffees players on the pitch, creating plenty of chances for his teammates.
Orel Mangala – 5
It was a solid enough midfield showing from the summer signing who kept the game ticking at times before being taken off with over 30 minutes to go. The Belgian will need to be defensively sound in future games but could have been worse in his time on the pitch.
Jack Harrison – 5
The 27-year-old didn’t show up very much throughout the game, being quite anonymous in attacking areas at times. Like Mangala, Harrison would have hoped for better before being hooked by Dyche and replaced by Tim Iroegbunam.
Iliman Ndiaye shines for Everton again v Newcastle
Iliman Ndiaye – 7
The Senegal international continues to be a shining light for the Toffees since signing from Marseille. Despite lacking somewhat in terms of end product, the 24-year-old always looks like making something happen and that was still the case against Newcastle. A top performance, just missing a goal or assist.
Dwight McNeil – 5
After his goalscoring exploits against Crystal Palace, the 24-year-old was another quiet player in the attacking third for the Toffees at Goodison. McNeil had a few efforts from range but nothing to truly test Nick Pope frustratingly.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 5
The Toffees’ number nine can feel aggrieved that he wasn’t awarded a penalty in the second half after struggling for the majority of the game. The 27-year-old would have expected better of his performance but things could have been so much different.
Substitutes
Idrissa Gueye – 4
Tim Iroegbunam – 5
