Jamie O’Hara has slammed the Premier League after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was not awarded a penalty in the goalless draw between Everton and Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Toffees striker looked to be brought down in the Goodison Park penalty area by Dan Burn, but after a lengthy VAR review, referee Craig Pawson decided against pointing to the spot.

Following the incident, the Premier League’s Match Centre account on X [5 October] provided information on the decision, citing that Calvert-Lewin had “kicked the back of Burn’s leg”.

O’Hara was having none of it, writing via X [5 October]: “That is one of the worst statements I have ever read,” with several laughing emojis.

Premier League slammed after Everton controversy emerges v Newcastle United

Evertonians often feel VAR is totally against the club, and even the Premier League, especially given the points deductions handed to them throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

The Premier League have certainly done themselves no favours in getting back into the Toffees’ good books with their explanation of the non-penalty decision.

While many fans of opposing teams will argue that Calvert-Lewin initiated the contact, penalties are given for the exact same thing up and down the country, so they will wonder why Everton are any different.

There is little arguing against the penalty James Tarkowski gave away in the first 45 minutes, having pulled Sandro Tonali to the floor by the scruff of the neck, but fans just want consistency.

O’Hara is rarely ever one to bite his tongue, and fans on Merseyside will be quick to support his opinion of the controversial decision as the Toffees missed out on a chance to claim all three points.
