Rhian Brewster must have left his Sheffield United teammate Harrison Burrows “fuming” during their 1-0 win over Millwall, according to Jamie Mackie.
The Blades went into that game knowing that a win would see them move back to the top of the Championship table.
Brewster though, missed a huge chance to put Chris Wilder’s side early in that match at The Den on Wednesday night (11 December).
Some good passing play in the centre of the park saw the ball worked out to Burrows on the left.
He then fired a brilliant ball across the face of goal, that the Sheffield United striker was unable to make contact on, when a touch would surely have made it 1-0.
The ball was then fired back across from the right by Alfie Gilchrist, this time bouncing through Brewster’s legs before Gus Hamer somehow fired off target to end any hope of an opener.
All of that left Mackie with a belief that Burrows would have been far from happy with the former Liverpool man for not taking the chance he created.
Speaking about that miss on Sky Sports Soccer Special (8:03pm), the former QPR and Nottingham Forest attacker said:”Sheffield United had a brilliant chance, Burrows on the left-hand side looks a real threat playing left-back but playing really high.
“You can see it here. Good play in the middle, Callum O’Hare and Hamer, they link really well, but this ball [from Burrows] ahh he’s got to be fuming that Brewster hasn’t got across.
“Gilchrist at the back post kind of recycles it and it comes to Hamer and they can’t manage to get it in. But what a ball from Burrows, someone’s got to be breaking their neck to get across the front post there.”
Rhian Brewster goal a relief after Sheffield United miss
Football Insider Opinion
Fortunately for Brewster and the Blades, this miss did not prove costly to their chances of a win against Millwall.
After that miss, the striker would get the goal that sealed the win for his side, tapping in Hamer’s cut-back from close range to earn his Chris Wilder’s side all three points.
Given he had not previously scored for Sheffield United since October 2022, that will surely have been a big weight lifted from his shoulders as he sent his side back above Leeds United to the top of the table.
It also means he is not going to feel quite so bad about not making the most of this opportunity earlier in the game.
Even so, Burrows will still feel frustrated that his good work in the build-up to this opportunity did not go rewarded to continue a good start to life with the Blades for the summer signing from Peterborough.
Considering Brewster’s job as a striker is to score goals, the fact he did not make more of a move to try and finish that chance is something Sheffield United will likely still want to address with him.
In other news, a Premier League club are considering recalling one of their players from a loan spell with Sheffield United in January.
