'Can play anywhere': Ally McCoist says Newcastle and Aston Villa should sign £45m Premier League player

Liverpool are yet to spring to action in the summer transfer window and remain the only Premier League side yet to sign a player.

With deadline day just over a week away, the possibility of the transfer window slamming shut without a single player coming through the door is startling to loom large over Anfield.

In terms of outgoings, however, we are likely to see some movement as Slot looks to fine-tune his squad.

One player who has been linked with a departure in recent weeks is Joe Gomez, and Ally McCoist believes the England international would be perfect for Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

McCoist believes Gomez’s versatility could be a valuable asset for any of his potential suitors, with the England international capable of playing anywhere across the backline.

“I think he would be a good signing for anybody. I think he would be a good signing for Villa and a good signing for Newcastle,” McCoist said on talkSPORT (7:27 AM, Aug 20th).

However, McCoist is unsure if Liverpool would sanction a sale at this stage of the transfer window as they wouldn’t have enough time to sign a suitable replacement.

McCoist continued: “I would be surprised if Liverpool let him go at this moment in time, I really would. He can play anywhere across the backline and that gives him a great appeal, particularly with clubs.

“I think he would be well suited to Newcastle and indeed Villa. But I would be really surprised if Liverpool let him go.”

What next for Liverpool and Joe Gomez?

Gomez is currently Liverpool’s longest-serving player, having joined the club from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2015.

The 27-year-old has entered his tenth season at Anfield and has made 224 appearances in all competitions, winning seven major honours.

He was left out of the squad for Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Ipswich Town amid transfer interest from several clubs.

Gomez is wanted by Chelsea, Newcastle and Aston Villa ahead of the transfer deadline and it remains to be seen if teams press ahead with their interest.

Liverpool value Gomez at around £30m, which is a reasonable fee for a player of his experience. If the Reds’ asking price is met, the 26-year-old will call time on his Anfield career after nearly ten years, while Arne Slot is likely to dip into the market to sign a defender.

Goncalo Inacio has been linked with a move to Liverpool ahead of deadline day, with Sporting CP willing to accept around £38m to part with the Portuguese international.

Liverpool won’t force Gomez out of the door but are unlikely to stand in his way if he receives a good offer to play regular football elsewhere.
