Mark Guidi tells Rangers to 'Upgrade' on exit-linked star in new title verdict

Rangers will have to “upgrade” on Todd Cantwell if they want to win the title after new transfer developments, according to Mark Guidi.

Philippe Clement confirmed after the pre-season clash with Birmingham City that the midfielder had asked to leave Ibrox after a summer of intense transfer speculation in Glasgow [Heart and Hand, 24 July].

While the Sunday Mail’s chief football writer, Guidi thinks the Gers need to be looking for “better” than the Englishman, he isn’t sure their budget will stretch far enough to secure an upgrade this summer.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (29 July, 19:27) he said: “For Todd Cantwell, for what Rangers need over the coming season I think he’s just a wee bit selfish and don’t think he’s enough of a team player.

“I don’t think there’s enough quality there to be perfectly honest. Maybe that’s the best kind of quality that Rangers can get within their budget, I don’t know.

“But they should be looking for better. If Rangers are serious about winning the title over 38 games, they need to upgrade on Todd Cantwell.”

While nothing is exactly imminent at this stage of the summer, reports have suggested that the Light Blues will look to secure a replacement for Cantwell if and when the 26-year-old’s move away is confirmed [Fabrizio Romano, 28 July].

In all honesty, it would now be best for all parties if this situation could be resolved sooner rather than later as it isn’t doing anyone any good to have the uncertainty over his future lingering as the new season approaches.

While he’s still at the club, the Light Blues will likely be unable to sanction a deal to sign his replacement and from Cantwell’s perspective, his stock will only continue to drop further while he is training with the B team.

Hopefully, a buyer will emerge sooner rather than later so that this saga can be nipped in the bud before it spirals out of control. Then supporters will be able to see if the Gers back Clement and Nils Koppen to sign an upgrade this summer.
