Michael Grant believes Philippe Clement will be sacked if Rangers lose to Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup.
The Gers are coming off a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aberdeen in the league and are now set to face the Steelmen at Hampden Park on 3 November in the semi-finals of the cup competition.
Clement is under pressure at the moment due to the Light Blues’ poor start to the season, and speaking on BBC Sounds [1 November], Grant has seen a similar pattern at the club and can’t see the Belgian survive a loss in the next game.
“I think if they lose, he doesn’t survive,” he said.
“The League Cup obviously gave Clement a trophy early into his reign a year ago. And at that point, it looked like a springboard.
“Instead, it’s been kind of almost a full stop. There’s not really been much you could buy into since then. He did sustain a title race up to a point. But then they buckled at Ross County and dropped points at Dundee.
“And that trait of failing domestic tests has continued.”
Rangers should get rid of Philippe Clement
It’s clear that Clement doesn’t have the confidence of the supporters, and no matter what the result is against Motherwell, questions will still be raised about the suitability of the Belgian.
Being the successor of Michael Beale in the dugout, there was an element of the Ibrox faithful being lenient towards the former Monaco head coach when things started to turn in the previous campaign.
Fans wanted to see the team make progress this season, but the opposite has happened, and the Gers have shown familiar failings when the stakes are high.
It doesn’t seem like Clement is a manager who can perform under pressure, and considering that he’s likely going to be under tremendous stress going forward, a change is necessary.
The board are not considering sacking the Belgian as things stand [Daily Record, 1 November], which might be a reflection on the lack of boardroom leadership right now.
Sticking by a manager who is clearly out of his depth and has lost the faith of the fans could have a detrimental impact, with a loss to Motherwell not out of the question.
