Lee Sharpe has added fuel to the fire of the speculation linking Archie Gray with a loan exit in January mooting Tottenham are eager to avoid “throwing him in the deep end”.
The 18-year-old is reportedly attracting interest from several Premier League sides for a loan move [GiveMeSport] as he struggles for regular game time in North London since his summer switch from Leeds United.
Sharpe, who plied his trade at Leeds from 1996-99, spoke to BestBettingSites [28 October] regarding the “incredible” midfield prospect, laying suggestions a loan move could be on the cards in the winter transfer window as part of his development plan.
He said: “Archie’s still a young lad and I think he’s at a great club in Tottenham with a great manager in Ange Postecoglou. It’s going to take time for him to establish himself in that team and, I don’t think Tottenham or Ange want to put him under that kind of pressure too soon.
“Archie Gray has got unbelievable ability. His football knowledge and football brain is incredible, and I think he’ll be a huge success, but he’s just a young lad at the moment and I think Tottenham have a development plan for him rather than just throwing him in the deep end.”
Tottenham should consider a Premier League loan for Archie Gray
While Spurs invested a £40m outlay to pry Gray from West Yorkshire, he was never expected to arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with an immediate first team claim, however, the youngster will surely have hoped for more minutes this season.
Gray is an investment for the future but his development must take priority in the present, Ange Postecoglou is blessed with an array of options in central midfield – spending the second half of the season at a low-to-mid-table Premier League side could be the perfect solution.
The England Under-21 international can, of course, operate at full-back when needed as he often was for Leeds but unless Real Madrid’s interest in Pedro Porro bears fruit, Gray stands an even less chance of displacing the Spaniard than he does breaking into the current midfield.
Postecoglou has an important decision to make and one he must get right, the club has spent too much on the investment to allow Gray to wither away in the dugout and the wrong loan move could set him further back.
Regardless, Gray undoubtedly would still be playing week in and week out in the Championship at Leeds, and while Tottenham can offer a better footballing environment for him to unlock his potential, regular game time must take priority above all else.
