Dominic Solanke earned himself a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window after a successful 2023-24 campaign with Bournemouth.
Spurs paid a club-record fee in the region of £65m to secure his services after he spearheaded the Cherries to a 12th-place finish under Andoni Iraola with 19 Premier League goals.
Solanke wasn’t the only English striker who was on the move this summer.
Ivan Toney was linked with a move to Arsenal but sealed a deadline day move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in what turned out to be one of the most surprising transfers of the summer.
And Agbonlahor believes Toney’s move to the Middle East could emerge as a huge boost for Solanke in terms of his England career.
Agbonlahor feels Ivan Toney’s transfer could help Dominic Solanke earn England recall
Toney was preferred to Solanke for Euro 2024 as England’s third-choice striker behind Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins.
The Tottenham striker has just one international cap to his name, but Agbonlahor feels that could be about to change in the coming months.
“If you are someone like Solanke, you will be like okay, I am up the pecking order here,” Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT (Sept 6, 7:16 am).
“He is delighted, isn’t he, Toney is gone. He is like, let me get myself fit, I am going to score goals for Spurs. He should be looking at that England squad and be like that’s me.”
Solanke could force himself into England picture after Tottenham move
England parted ways with Gareth Southgate after losing out to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, with Lee Carsley currently serving as their interim manager.
As they prepare to enter a new era, players like Solanke could benefit from having a clean slate.
His move to Tottenham would allow him to thrive under a manager who loves to play free-flowing football, while he is also surrounded by better teammates than what was the case at Bournemouth.
Ange Postecoglou praised Solanke’s performance on debut against Leicester City, with the striker getting into some good positions despite not scoring.
He’ll look to score his first goal for the club after the international break and with Tottenham set to face Arsenal in the North London derby, there isn’t a better stage for Solanke to endear himself to the home fans.
