Report: What Paul Mitchell said in meeting about Marc Guehi which Crystal Palace used against Newcastle

Newcastle United’s one main target in the summer transfer window was Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace, but nothing ended up materialising.

Eddie Howe didn’t really get things his own way in the summer with the failure to strengthen in an area that he had identified as key in talks with Paul Mitchell.

Newcastle ended up deciding against a last minute bid for Marc Guehi after learning his £75m price tag, despite following him for most of the window.

A combination of Joachim Andersen joining Fulham and Chadi Riad suffering an injury at Crystal Palace certainly didn’t help the Tyneside club’s cause.

The Magpies ended up deciding against alternative centre-back options as they saw no reason to rush into a signing if it’s not the right player.

And, it now looks as if there was another factor that played into the hands of Crystal Palace…

What Paul Mitchell told Steve Parish in Marc Guehi meeting

Steve Parish is a tough negotiator and understands how important it is to get the most out of players.

But, it seems as if he was fed some information that almost made it easy for him to not be forced into selling Guehi after a meeting with Newcastle chief Paul Mitchell.

According to the Daily Mail, Paul Mitchell traveled down to London to meet Parish in the middle of August with a view to closing the transfer.

It’s stated that the meeting lasted around four hours. However, it didn’t go as planned as by all accounts, Parish left the meeting more determined than ever to resist Newcastle’s advances.

After he heard that Howe had put all their eggs in Guehi’s basket, Parish used the information as a leverage to stick to his high price.

Will Newcastle return for Guehi?

Well, it has been reported that Marc Guehi isn’t convinced about signing a new deal at Crystal Palace, which could open the door for Newcastle to make another move in January.

Or, there is the potential to get him on a free transfer if the Tyneside club can wait it out, though they will face huge competition with a line of other clubs looking at the situation.

Simon Jordan wasn’t too happy with Paul Mitchell’s ‘ridiculous’ comments recently and it doesn’t look as if Newcastle fans will be too fond of him after hearing that he gave Parish ammunition.

To be fair to Newcastle, they were right not to meet the price tag of Guehi as although he’s a really promising young player, £75 million is an awful lot of money to spend.

And, his situation could even work out in their favour now.
