Newcastle talks could collapse - Transfer Guru

Crystal Palace are reluctant to entertain renewed attempts from Newcastle to sign Marc Guehi after their failed attempts to sign him in the summer.

This is according to former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle could come back with a new offer for the 24-year-old in January.

The Magpies held extensive negotiations with Palace in the summer which ended when Palace upped their initial £70million asking price to £75million.

Newcastle had made a bid matching that valuation, before the sales of Joachim Andersen and Michael Olise, and an injury to Chadi Riad, saw the Eagles raise his price tag.

However, the Eagles had also been frustrated throughout negotiations, with Newcastle having opened the bidding at £40million – well below the asking price.

That fee was then slowly edged up over the course of four separate offers from the transfer team at St James’ Park before the eventual £70million offer came late in the window.

This is said to have frustrated Palace, who stuck to their initial price tag until their late change as a result of their changing circumstances.

Now, Brown has insisted those negotiations have made Steve Parish reluctant to entertain renewed talks with the Magpies.

On top of that, he explained that Palace accepting a lower offer for him just six months after standing firm for their asking price would leave them in an awkward position.

Brown previously told Football Insider that some behind the scenes at Newcastle were displeased with the way negotiations had gone, losing out for the sake of £5million.

Now, the former West Ham, Tottenham and Sunderland scout has insisted that the deal may now prove difficult for the Magpies to pull off.

“Is the situation with Newcastle going to be reignited or is somebody else going to come in?” he questioned when speaking to Football Insider.

“I don’t think people are going to come in at that same £70million price.

“Newcastle could come back in for him, but would the chairman at Crystal Palace bite the bullet and take less from them than they offered in the first place?

“I’ve heard they were a bit frustrated about the way that deal went with low-ball offers and whatnot.

“It would certainly come as a blow for Palace if they accepted a lower bid just six months later.

“They’ll definitely be reluctant to have those conversations.

“I think that deal would be difficult for Newcastle at this stage because things didn’t exactly go swimmingly last time.

“Neither side was totally happy with the way it went.“
