Rangers legend Barry Ferguson has claimed that Sam Lammers’ time at the club is over.
Writing for The Daily Record on Friday (July 19) the former player now turned pundit stressed that there is no place for the forward in Philippe Clement’s squad.
However, that doesn’t mean the £2.7million-rated player will leave Ibrox this summer, despite interest from Dutch clubs.
Utrecht have already agreed to a £2.7million fee with the Gers for Lammers, but his high wage expectations have halted any potential deal [Daily Record, July 17]. The forward has three years left on his current Rangers contract.
Ferguson said: “There’s a lot of interest in the Dutchman back in his homeland after a successful six-month loan spell at Utrecht. But, while those clubs are willing to pay the fee Rangers want, none can match his financial terms.
“As much as it’s clear his time is up under Clement, Lammers has every right to sit tight with three more years on his deal remaining. If he can’t make the same money elsewhere why should he leave?”
Sam Lammers in no rush to leave Rangers
Lammers has every reason to stay put at Rangers, and it all comes down to money. While Dutch clubs are eager to bring him back home, none can match the hefty wages he earns at Ibrox. Why should Lammers take a pay cut just to move back to the Netherlands?
He’s still got three years left on his contract, and the financial security that comes with it is hard to ignore. Utrecht showed serious interest, even willing to pay Rangers’ asking price of £2.7million.
However, when it came to wages, they couldn’t meet his demands, offering just a third of what he’s earning now.
Staying at the Gers makes perfect sense for Lammers. He’s getting paid well and doesn’t have to compromise his finances.
And, until a club can match what he makes at Ibrox, Lammers is smart to stay where he is, enjoying the benefits of his lucrative contract.
