'Hold on...' - Gordon Dalziel cannot believe what McCormack said about old Rangers contracts

Gordon Dalziel has been left stunned after Ross McCormack revealed Rangers used to offer £1200 win bonus in old contracts.

The Gers have come under fire in recent weeks for performances with certain individuals, such as James Tavernier and Cyriel Dessers, being slammed for their showings.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on 14 November, McCormack has revealed the finances which stopped fringe players from wanting to leave Ibrox to challenge themselves in the past.

He said: “Players were probably getting the offer to go out to a Scottish Championship team or a lower-end Scottish Premiership team and were knocking it back because they were getting, I think the win bonus was like £1200 when I was back at Rangers.

“You sit on the bench, you get that. They won nearly every game.”

This left Dalziel stunned as he replied: “Hold on. Stop the bus a minute. Did you just say £1200? For sitting on the bench? I would have signed a ten-year contract, I’m telling you now.”

Rangers contract reveal is stunning

The Gers have had a general lack of star players coming out of the Light Blues’ academy and making their way in the game, in recent years.

This has to be a concern for the hierarchy with this putting a limit on how good the team can become and the finances they can bring in from selling these young talents.

The likes of Ross McCausland and Leon King are the best examples of talents coming through and having a positive impact but even they aren’t looking like elite players just yet.

With this concern among supporters, this admission from McCormack may shine a light on why some academy players never truly reach their best form.

If the option is there to work your way into the first team and just stay on the bench and earn win bonuses, there is less onus on them to go out and make a name for themselves.

Although they would likely have dreams of becoming stars at Ibrox or wherever else, the prospect of having an easier ride and earning a good wage must be too good for some to turn down, which only harms the Gers in the long run.
