'Horrendous' - Michael Stewart rages at what he saw Rangers outfield player do v St Mirren

Michael Stewart has slammed Jefte for his role in Rangers’ loss to St Mirren on Boxing Day.

The Gers were defeated 2-1 at St Mirren Park as the gap to league leaders Celtic was extended to 12 points ending any title talk around Philippe Clement’s side ahead of the Old Firm clash on 2 January.

The Brazilian full-back was caught out for the opener after bombing forward and goalkeeper Jack Butland clattered Greg Kiltie in the penalty area with Oisin Smyth scoring from the spot.

The former Hearts midfielder commented on the incident during Premier Sports live broadcast of the contest [26 December], saying: “You can see there that Jefte is playing him on, I mean that is a horrendous line to be taking.”

One step forward, two steps back for Rangers

Clement’s side had won their last four Scottish Premiership matches and looked to have turned a corner and put their dismal start to the season behind them.

There was talk of catching up with Celtic and a title race being revived between the two sides after the Bhoys dropped points earlier in the week.

However, the Light Blues proved that they are not ready to be considered title contenders, in fact, they are a long way off it.

The Gers would fight back to equalise but would concede a last-gasp goal to fall to an embarrassing defeat.

Clement’s side were unbeaten in 11 matches before the defeat in Paisley but it feels like all that positive work has been undone due to the nature of the loss.

They will need to pick themselves up and be ready to go again on Sunday (29 December) when they travel to face Motherwell.

In other Rangers news, a transfer update has emerged on a new defender ahead of the January window.
