Kieran Dowell will leave Rangers with the club’s “good wishes” if he departs for England this summer, according to Derek Ferguson.

The Gers midfielder’s future is in doubt as Philippe Clement overhauls his squad, with Kenny Miller suggesting in his Daily Record column (2 June) he’d made “no impact” and the manager would be open to offers, while Chris Jack wrote for Rangers Review on 28 May that a return south of the border “looks on the cards”.

Ex-Ibrox favourite Ferguson agrees that the 26-year-old’s move from Norwich a year ago hasn’t worked out, after just 16 appearances in all competitions, often off the bench.

The pundit accepts that injuries are extremely tough on players but insists the club must be “ruthless” as they attempt to strengthen during the transfer window.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “Listen, I’m not having a go at boys who have injuries, it must be horrible, it must be heartbreaking for them. But Rangers have got to be ruthless, we cannae afford that.

“I know it’s a contact sport, well, it’s turning into a non-contact sport the way it’s going, but you can see there’s a player in there, but he’s just not fit enough, doesn’t play enough games.

“So if he goes down to England and finds himself a club he goes with our good wishes.

“But again, like quite a number of them, it’s not happened for him at Rangers.”

Philippe Clement has to be “ruthless” with Rangers during the summer transfer window.

Norwich to Rangers move proves a struggle for Kieran Dowell

Following the departure of John Lundstram and Ryan Jack as their contracts expired Clement is not overwhelmed with midfield options, even if there might be a deal in the offing for Connor Barron, but much like Jack it all too often hasn’t mattered if Dowell was in the squad or not because he hasn’t been fit to play.

Injuries aren’t a bigger issue for anyone but the player who is afflicted but it seems to have been a problem that is hampered Rangers more than most in recent years.

Dowell was a Michael Beale signing and a new manager can see those brought in by the predecessor left out in the cold even without availability struggles, and since he was a free transfer it might not take a huge offer to get him.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have captured another summer signing with a view on “huge profit” already.
