Rangers are now ready to pursue their remaining transfer targets after moving on three unwanted players, according to the Daily Record.
Fraser Wilson reported on 26 July that Philippe Clement will be able to “get down to business” in his bid to sign the likes of Morgan Whittaker and Joan Jordan [Daily Record, 19 July], with high-earning players off the books.
That comes after Sam Lammers sealed a return to the Netherlands with FC Twente and Jose Cifuentes set to head to Aris Thessaloniki, while defender Connor Goldson’s move to Aris Limassol reportedly imminent [Derek Clark, 26 July].
The Gers re-started their transfer activity on 26 July with the capture of winger Vaclav Cerny on loan from Wolfsburg, and remain interested in both Whittaker and Jordan as Clement’s overhaul continues.
Rangers finally reignite transfer activity after barren July period
Prior to Cerny’s arrival on loan being confirmed on 26 July, there had been a three-week period in which no new faces came through the doors at Ibrox, their longest spell without a signing all summer.
Hamza Igamane’s transfer from FAR Rabat on 5 July was the last of six quick-fire arrivals before this, as the Gers burned bright early in the transfer window to kick-start Clement’s rebuild of the squad.
The first of these, Brazilian left-back Jefte, was confirmed before last season had even finished, but recent weeks have seen that kind of impetus lacking at Ibrox.
A sell-to-buy policy imposed on Clement has undoubtedly limited the Belgian’s desired rate of new arrivals, but with Lammers’ switch to FC Twente in particular [Anthony Joseph, 26 July], funds have finally been freed up.
Whittaker and Jordan are of a higher calibre than any of the Light Blues’ signings so far this summer – many of whom have been young prospects – but Clement will now have renewed confidence in getting such deals over the line.
In other Rangers news, questions within the club have been shared over their pursuit of Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland.
