'A dozen names' - Stevie Clifford lists six players who could leave Rangers as well as Cantwell

Rangers could still sell seven more players this summer as Philippe Clement’s overhaul continues, according to Stevie Clifford.

Writing in the Rangers Review (27 July), Clifford said that developments in recent days have suggested that the ‘dozen in, dozen out’ expectation set at the start of the summer could yet be fulfilled.

Todd Cantwell handing in a transfer request to Clement preceded Sam Lammeers joining FC Twente while deals involving Conor Goldson and Jose Cifuentes could free up more funds for Philippe Clement to make more additions to his squad [Daily Record, 27 July].

And Clifford predicted as many as six more would be available for transfer on top of Cantwell.

He said: “There was an expectation of a dozen in and a dozen out this summer – following the revelation that Cantwell has asked to leave, there will potentially be a dozen names departing.

“You would imagine Kieran Dowell, Ben Davies, Cyriel Dessers, Tom Lawrence and Rabbi Matondo will all be available for transfer, if the right offer arrives. That’s not to mention the James Tavernier scenario.

“This could well be the squad restructure we have needed for some time.”

Rangers transfer business kicks back into life with necessary exits

Transfers at Ibrox so far this summer have somewhat reflected the ‘London buses’ adage – albeit in reverse order after a barren three-week spell following a quick-fire start to the window.

After six signings at a rate of every nine days or so, 21 passed without any incomings whatsoever before Vaclav Cerny’s arrival on loan from Wolfsburg was confirmed on 26 July.

That move, which saw the Gers beat sides in both La Liga and the EFL Championship to the Czech’s signature, appears to have set in motion the foundations for the rest of the club’s summer business.

Should Tavernier and Cantwell’s exits be sealed in the coming weeks [Scottish Sun, 26 July] – as is expected by many – Clifford’s quintet of other potential departures may be in line to follow thereafter.

With the likes of Lawrence Shankland linked with a big-money move to Ibrox [Daily Record, 27 July], it remains the case that however keen Clement is to get any of those seven players off the books, they must be replaced by clear upgrades across the team.

In other Rangers news, ‘senior figures’ inside the club have expressed doubt over Clement’s pursuit of a new striker this summer.
