Connor Goldson’s exit from Rangers will now require Philippe Clement to sign an experienced new centre-back as a priority this summer, according to Derek Ferguson.
The vice-captain is as good as gone to Aris Limassol as he heads to join his new teammates in Austria [Derek Clark, 26 July] with only an announcement still to come.
His departure will leave a big hole to fill with a senior defender but the manager has been unable to bring established new arrivals in without selling and is now just a week from the Scottish Premiership opener against Hearts.
As a result Ferguson believes the club are in a “real bad place” currently and the requirement to get senior signings made is paramount, starting with a replacement for 31-year-old Goldson.
“Absolutely, it’s a no-brainer, we need experience in,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.
“We need experience that will mean guys will hit the ground running.
“We’ve brought in these guys that are projects. That’s all well and good but it’s about the here and the now.
“The way the Rangers fanbase is at the moment they’re all over the ship. They’re a disgruntled lot to say the least.
“Yes, we need good players in the building. It’s simple as.
“Look at the last couple of games we’ve played. We’re way off it in terms of the quality that we’ve got. We’re in a real bad place at the moment.”
Philippe Clement must push through Rangers deals in and out
Goldson’s move is a positive development as Clement needed to move out various established figures in order to make space in the squad and on the wage bill for new signings.
But it has taken so long to secure moves such moves that he is bound to be playing catch-up with a below-strength side to kick off the new campaign.
Transfer action is belatedly arriving as Goldson looks set to follow Sam Lammers out, after the forward’s confirmed transfer to FC Twente, and the likes of Ianis Hagi on the brink of leaving as well [Digi Sport, 26 July].
So the loan capture of Vaclav Cerny from Wolfsburg now needs to be the start of a wave of incoming deals to quickly replace those who depart, with a centre-back prominent on the list amid links to Scott McKenna.
In other Rangers news, the view of senior figures at Ibro on signing Lawrence Shankland has now emerged.
