Alan Hutton believes Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is “crying out” for a new striker and thinks Ivan Toney is the right player to fill the void.
The England international has been linked with a move to North London throughout the summer, with reports suggesting he is hoping to be approached by the Lilywhites before the transfer window slams shut [talkSPORT, 23 July].
Spurs have been missing a natural number nine ever since Harry Kane completed his move to Bayern Munich last summer, with Son Heung-min and Richarlison sharing the workload between them last season.
The Brazilian has been linked with a move away from North London this summer [talkSPORT, 12 May] and Hutton believes the opportunity to play week in and week out will entice Toney into making the move to Spurs.
“I just feel that could be a better fit,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.
“He’s in London already, a big London club is coming in for him and they’re crying out for a striker I think for me personally.
“They need that guy who is going to score 20-plus goals for them that is going to help them get back into the top four.
“If he were to go to somewhere like Villa where Ollie Watkins is already there, it just doesn’t really sit well with me.
“Maybe Villa fans would like it, but I’m just trying to think from a player’s point of view of where will he actually be playing. There will be more opportunities at Tottenham for him.
“Richarlison could be leaving, I know Son Heung-min has played up there but I prefer him from the left so I think that could be a good move if they’re willing to pay the money.”
Will Ivan Toney exit Brentford amid Tottenham transfer speculation?
As Hutton suggests, Spurs desperately need a new number nine through the door this summer if they want to close the gap to Aston Villa and break back into the Champions League places this season.
Toney may not have had a great season for the Bees this term, only scoring four goals in 17 appearances, but he has shown in the past that he can be lethal in the Premier League when at his best.
Postecoglou’s attacking style would almost certainly get the best out of the England international, but first Daniel Levy and his recruitment team have to try and strike a deal to tempt Brentford into parting ways with the striker.
That won’t be easy, but with his contract up next season, it may be now or never for Thomas Frank’s side to cash in.
In other Tottenham news, Hutton has suggested Scott McTominay would fit in “seamlessly” at Spurs after a new Manchester United update
