How many fouls Cristian Romero made at the Copa America may come as a surprise to Tottenham fans - opinion

Cristian Romero has gained a reputation for being something of a hothead ever since his move to Tottenham in August 2021.

The Tottenham No.17 has received 24 yellow cards in 82 Premier League appearances since moving to north London – along with two red cards – although Spurs fans will surely be surprised to hear what the South American did during Argentina’s Copa America win.

So, what is the latest on Cristian Romero? Let’s take a look…

Tottenham fans will surely be surprised by Cristian Romero discipline at Copa America

Ange Postecoglou has previously warned the Argentine about letting his teammates down with poor discipline.

After Romero was sent off in a 4-1 defeat against Chelsea in November, the Independent quoted the Australian as saying: “When he oversteps the mark, the whole group pays a price so it’s up to him to maintain discipline I know he can show.”

By the looks of it, the man from Cordoba has listened carefully to those comments.

Across five appearances at the Copa America this summer, Romero only committed three fouls, with none of those coming in either the semi-final or the final.

The 26-year-old also managed to avoid picking up a single card as he helped Argentina concede just a single goal in the five games he played.

It was a tremendous tournament from Romero, who did incredibly well to stay out of trouble at a competition known for chaotic scenes, as we witnessed in the clash between Uruguay and Colombia, where Liverpool No.9 Darwin Nunez was seen throwing a chair.

Captain material

Romero may still only be just 26 years of age, but he is now performing like an experienced veteran, somebody who leads by example and has learned from the errors of his ways.

To have somebody this imperious at the back is fantastic for Tottenham, and Postecoglou must work hard to find similar characters he can bring to N17 – a team of players likeminded to Romero could potentially do something very special for Spurs, in our view.

Hopefully, Tottenham recognise Romero’s achievement – and tremendous discipline – when he returns to Hotspur Way, as his efforts certainly do not deserve to go unnoticed.
