'How much?' - Pundit view: Rangers to make loss of more than 66% to sell striker

Rangers would face taking a hit of more than two thirds if they try to sell Danilo before the transfer deadline, according to Marvin Bartley.

The BBC pundit responded to a fan via X on 6 August to question what the Light Blues might take in fees if they were to move on their current top two forwards in the Brazilian and Cyriel Dessers, who has been linked to a move away [Chris Jack, 3 July].

Bartley suggested Danilo would struggle to command a £2million asking price just a year after arriving at Ibrox for £6m from Feyenoord [Sky Sports], after a nightmare debut campaign through injury.

On the subject of replacing the current goal scorers he wrote: “How much do you think you get combined? I don’t think you get a 1/3 of what you played for Danilo due to the injuries etc.”

Cyriel Dessers remains top Rangers striker

The clear implication is that selling Danilo in order to fund the arrival of a new striker is not viable this summer, and Bartley is right.

His value will have tanked after spending most of the previous campaign out injured, and he is not yet back up to full speed even now.

Cyriel Dessers scored a vital goal to equalise in stoppage time against Dynamo Kyiv on 6 August and as things stand he is the best Philippe Clement has at his command.

But with new signing Hamza Igamane not yet ready for action after spending most of the preseason in one-to-one training [4 Lads Had A Dream, 30 July] it is only Dessers who could feasibly be sold on.

That would be a risk actually taking a step backwards unless the replacement was a guaranteed source of goals.

In Scotland Lawrence Shankland would be that, but although some fear it is likely the Hearts captain will end up at Ibrox [Daily Record, 2 August] nothing concrete appears to have moved on that yet.

Albion Rrahmani has also been heavily linked this summer but whether the Kosovan would adapt to the Scottish Premiership is impossible to tell ahead of time.

And with interest not translating into cash on the table for Dessers [Rangers Review, 7 August] it may be a moot point for the rest of the window with the Nigerian international leading the line for the foreseeable future.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have made an approach to sign a wonderkid from a Premier League giant.
