Rangers pursuing Morgan Whittaker with big-money bids may be wide of the mark as The 4th Official reports he has “not heard anything of the sort”.

According to the online source via Patreon on 20 July the apparent transfer pursuit of the Plymouth Argyle winger should be taken with a “huge pinch of salt”.

The Daily Record reported late on 19 July that the Light Blues had reignited their interest in the former Swansea man and an offer that would have totalled more than £7million had been turned down.

A move is said to be partially funded by the impending sale of captain James Tavernier who is subject to bids from Trabzonspor.

James Tavernier exit to fund major Rangers bid?

Selling the captain looks likely and appears to be necessary to help get the window moving again but a huge bid for Whittaker would be a surprise.

It remains to be seen how much Tavernier will bring in but the fact that Trabzonspor’s improved offer [Daily Record, 20 July] is set to be challenged by Turkish rivals Besiktas [Takvim, 20 July] and potentially English clubs as well [Scottish Sun, 19 July] should help push it up.

But Philippe Clement indicated that he was obliged to sell in order to buy during a preseason interview [Rangers Review, 13 July] so he surely needs to see more names depart to start splashing major cash.

If sales can be made for the likes of Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers, Connor Goldson, Todd Cantwell, Scott Wright and Ridvan Yilmaz then they could be scope for some headline signings.

Philippe Clement
If Rangers already have millions to spend Philippe Clement has been economical with the truth.

Without significant progress has been made on that front it might seem reckless to spend close to £10m on Whittaker straight away.

That sort of money might be enough to secure the return of Abdallah Sima from Brighton when the former loan star has already proven he can thrive in Clement’s set up.

Rangers have been on Whittaker’s case for some time [Football Scotland] and the 23-year-old looks like a spectacular signing on paper after a campaign where he scored 19 times in the Championship so perhaps there is hope.

But having been reportedly offering Swansea just £1.5m when they failed to buy him just 18 months ago [Fabrizio Romano] it would be some turnaround to have tripled that bid and doesn’t appear to fit with the manager’s recent stance.

In other Rangers news, a hijack bid is set to arrive at Ibrox as another club look to sign an exit-bound Gers ace.
