Hugh Keevins shares new title race verdict after Rangers Europa League win v Malmo

Hugh Keevins believes Rangers are still title contenders this season after their Europa League win against Malmo.

Philippe Clement’s side started their European campaign with an excellent 2-0 win in Sweden on Thursday (26 September) thanks to goals from Nedim Bajrami and Ross McCausland in either half.

Although the Light Blues still trail Celtic and Aberdeen by five points after the first five games of the Premiership season, Daily Record journalist Keevins believes they can get their hands on the title this term.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (27 September) he said: “I think last night showed that Rangers are still title contenders.

“They still have a five-point gap to catch up to Celtic and Aberdeen, but there are signs there and there were so many players missing last night and Clement compensated for all of that.”

Can Rangers beat Celtic to the Premiership title?

One win doesn’t ever define a season, but Rangers showed against Malmo on Thursday that even when supporters expect very little from them, they are capable of turning up and pulling off an excellent result.

The performance from Clement’s side was excellent and on another day the Light Blues would have won even more comfortably, especially if the likes of Vaclav Cerny and Cyriel Dessers been a bit more composed in the final third.

While a win in Europe does very little to help the Gers’ Premiership hopes, it does show that they can perform on the biggest stage. They are going to have to replicate that performance against Celtic as well if they want to get their hands on the title, however.

Clement’s biggest weakness since arriving in Glasgow has been his poor record against the Gers’ Old Firm neighbours. Until he finds a way to get one over Brendan Rodgers’ side, he is going to struggle to win a title.

Hopefully, that will finally change this season and Keevins’ latest prediction won’t look ridiculous by the end of the campaign.
