‘I Am Surprised’ - Stefan Borson taken aback by £70m+ Leicester City twist

Leicester City have spent money on strengthening their squad despite their financial issues to give themselves the best chance of avoiding relegation this season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he is surprised Steve Cooper’s side spent so much money throughout the summer transfer window.

Leicester were charged in March with a breach of the Premier League’s PSR rules for 2022-23, with a points deduction set to be the likely punishment.

They reported losses of £89.7million in 2022-23 despite top-flight sides only being permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

But the club continued to splash the cash on new signings during the summer transfer window, having spent more than £70million on nine new additions.

Leicester City face bigger financial issues if they suffer relegation

Borson conceded, however, it would be far more costly for Leicester if they were relegated this season than it would be taking another potential PSR hit for the following campaign.

He told Football Insider: “We are short of information in terms of the starting point for what their finances look like going into this season.

“Personally, I am surprised they are spending in this way.

“But they probably look at it knowing that they are at least going to get some points deducted this season.

“Therefore, they know they are going to have to strengthen on the field, otherwise, they are going to be in serious danger of relegation, which would be far more expensive than taking a hit on PSR next season.”
