Jamie Redknapp is often passionate in his assessments of Tottenham Hotspur and he hasn’t held back in criticising one of their star players against Aston Villa today.
Spurs came from behind to seal a big win over Villa as they won 4-1 thanks to a superb second half.
Tottenham’s big second half was much needed and it spared the blushes of some, with goalkeeper Vicario among those called out by Frank Lampard for being poor.
Of course, there’s always another drama when it comes to Tottenham and they had that again today despite their big win.
Surprisingly, it came from Heung-Min Son, who reacted angrily in the dugout after being taken off by Ange Postecoglou for Richarlison.
And speaking on the incident, Jamie Redknapp and Roy Keane seemed to defend Postecoglou.
Roy Keane and Jamie Redknapp give verdict on Heung-Min Son reaction against Aston Villa
Speaking on Sky Sports about the reaction from Son when he was taken off, both Keane and Redknapp offered slightly different takes on the situation.
“He has just come back from injury as well. Obviously, you are thinking it’s 1-1, you are making a big call there, but it worked out well. The manager obviously knows the players, he trusts the players to come off the bench. Son was obviously not happy being taken off. It’s a squad game,” Keane said.
Meanwhile, Jamie Redknapp appeared to disagree with Keane and he admitted he didn’t like what he saw from Son at all.
“I didn’t like it, to be honest. Richarlison comes on, he comes on and makes a goal in his position. He is trying to protect him. I just thought it was a little bit uncomfortable to watch, to be honest.”
Son should lead by example
There’s nothing wrong with a bit of passion and most players don’t like being taken off, which most managers accept.
However, £22m signing Son is the Tottenham captain and ultimately, this sort of petulance is not needed by a player who is so well respected at the club.
Given what we know of Son’s personality, he will have no doubt apologised to Postecoglou and that will be the end of it.
Further, the manager was also proven right as Richarlison starred and Spurs went on to win comfortably.
Son, then, was the one left with his egg on his face here really.
