Michael Stewart has admitted that he wasn’t impressed with Rangers defender Ben Davies in the 0-0 draw at Tynecastle on Saturday 3 August.
The BBC pundit was clearly unhappy as the centre-back stepped forward with the ball before giving it away, clueless in possession.
Davies was dragged off in the second half of the game by Philippe Clement, after a torrid time against Lawrence Shankland and Kenneth Vargas.
Stewart said live on BBC Sportsound [3 August, 12:36pm]: “That wasn’t particularly great from Davies either.
“I know it’s tight and it’s congested but I don’t like when you see centre-halves stepping forward, and they really don’t have an idea of what they’re trying to do.
“You know if you’re stepping into those areas you’ve got to have some sort of picture in your mind as to where you look to play.
“He just seemed to be going into a blind cul-de-sac there and then flicked it away, [it was] unfortunate that it didn’t come to hearts being able to break.”
Ben Davies to be axed already for Robin Propper at Rangers
Davies is quite a curious case. The defender joined from Liverpool in the 2022/23 season.
Although he has been involved with the first team since arriving at Ibrox, last term he failed to make as many appearances as some of his teammates.
The 28-year-old played only 17 times and scored once. Whilst his absence from the first team last term was likely due to Connor Goldson’s involvement in the first team, now that he has exited, his spot is up for grabs.
However, as the Gers have just added the experienced Propper to their ranks [Scottish Sun, 2 August], Davies and the Dutchman may be battling it out for the starting spot.
The duo both play on the left-hand side and both have similar playstyles.
As the game against Hearts came too soon for Propper to make his debut, this game at Tynecastle should have been the one where Davies staked his claim, but he only failed.
