'What's changed?' - Sutton and Boyd clash as new Shankland to Rangers transfer verdict shared

Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton argued over whether Rangers should sign Hearts star Lawrence Shankland before the two sides clashed on Saturday (3 August).

The 28-year-old has been continuously linked with a move to Ibrox this summer [Daily Record], with the striker only having a year left on his contract at Tynecastle.

Despite failing to add to his five prior goals against the Gers in the 0-0 draw, many are still adamant that he should be the one to replace Cyriel Dessers this summer.

Speaking live via Sky Sports on Saturday (3 August), Sutton said: “Everything I’m hearing is that Shankland wants a move to Rangers. I think he’d be an upgrade on the centre-forward they’ve got right now.

“I know Dessers scored 20 goals last season but I think Shankland is a more ruthless finisher, more reliable, so it would be a great move.”

Responding, Boyd said: “In front of goal, he’s arguably the best in the league with both feet. People say that all he does is score goals, but others say scoring goals is the hardest part of the game. He’s added more to his game now.

“If he comes to Rangers, there will be a lot more counter-attacking football, and I don’t think that suits him. He needs balls in and around the box.”

When asked if he would be an upgrade on Dessers, he replied: “I don’t know. In terms of finishing, yes. But for £3million, there are other areas of the Rangers squad where the money can be spent.”

Sutton then said: “All of last season you were banging on about Rangers signing Shankland. What’s changed? If he was going to win Rangers the league, yeah [I would spend £3million].”

Rangers to sign Lawrence Shankland before the transfer window closes?

Sutton was almost in disbelief at Boyd’s opinion on the free-scoring Hearts striker, who has haunted the Gers in front of goal over the last few seasons.

Fans of any team in the Scottish Premiership are aware of the talent and danger that Lawrence possesses in front of goal, and if he were available for £3million, it seems like a must-signing this summer.

While Dessers was able to record 22 goals in his first season in Scotland, the Nigerian international has been regularly slated for his all-round play, failing to combine well with his teammates.

It appears the 29-year-old is set to remain at Ibrox despite some reports linking him with a move away, but many will feel that this should not hinder the club from signing another striker.

It is fair to say that Clement and Nils Koppen are working on a very restricted budget, but given the striker’s ability on the pitch, it does not feel like an opportunity that should be left alone.

In other Rangers news, David Edgar shared his reaction after the Gers announced the signing of Robin Propper at Ibrox.
