Gordon Duncan couldn’t believe what he heard as he argued with a Rangers fan about the penalty incident at Ibrox in the 1-0 win against Hibernian.
Mykola Kukharevych missed the spot-kick for the visitors on Sunday [29 September] after John Souttar had been adjudged to handle the ball in first-half stoppage time.
Duncan engaged in a back-and-forth with a Rangers fan live on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard [30 September], with the caller arguing the penalty should have been re-taken for encroachment as Robin Propper entered the penalty area as the kick was taken.
He said: “So you’re saying you’re allowed 22 players inside the box when the penalty kick can be taken?
Gordon replied: “All I’m saying is, the player who has done the encroaching has to have a material impact – the thing is, the longer these conversations go on, it isn’t my rule, I don’t really care.”
Rangers survive scare to beat Hibernian
Regardless of the rule change on encroachment and whether or not the penalty should have been re-taken, Jack Butland provided the stop to deny Kukharevych and secure the three points for Rangers.
Fortunately for the Gers, the effort from the penalty spot was dreadful, had Hibs managed to equalise at Ibrox it is unlikely a second goal for the hosts would have ensued as the visitors proved tough to break down on Sunday.
Vaclav Cerny hit the headlines again, hitting out at the Rangers faithful during another underwhelming performance whereas, Cyriel Dessers missed a golden opportunity to settle the tie in the second half in another bad day at the office for the Light Blues forwards.
Clement has won four consecutive matches in all competitions since the 3-0 hammering by Celtic at Parkhead and while the results are coming thick and fast, the performances are leaving a lot to be desired.
The players who arrived this summer, now know the volatile atmosphere that can become of a full-capacity Ibrox if the supporters feel they need more from the side.
For now, the Gers supporters will be content with winning football matches, however, if the performances from the underfiring players do not improve in the coming weeks, they will be on for a long season in Glasgow.
