Connor Goldson has warned Rangers against letting James Tavernier leave as he remains a key part of the squad.
Tavernier often takes the brunt of the blame from frustrated supporters and has been left out of Philippe Clement’s starting line-up at times this term.
There have even been suggestions the full-back could be moved on as early as January, but ex-colleague Goldson – who moved to Aris Limassol in the summer – does not agree with that.
“I don’t see Celtic getting rid of Callum McGregor or Scott Brown before him when they have a bad few months,” he told the Daily Record.
“They understand these boys know the culture and drive the new signings to who they become. It will only be when Tav leaves that he gets the respect he deserves.”
“Tav has been absolutely amazing for Rangers. He plays every game and you don’t realise how hard that is to replace. When you do that, you’ll take the most criticism – because you’re the player who will have the most bad games.
“If you play 60 games and have five bad ones, these five will be remembered. If you play 10 games and have one bad one, people think you’re amazing.”
James Tavernier simply not good enough for Rangers
First and foremost, Tavernier is not the biggest problem at Rangers. Nor is Cyriel Dessers, another who is a lightning rod for criticism.
However, it has become clear for a while now – this season especially – that Tavernier is on the wane.
Due to how impressive he has been in an attacking sense down the years, that has often clouded over his defensive deficiencies.
However, when he is unable to do either at a high level, you have to wonder why exactly he is picked in the side.
Rangers are going through a very rough spell at the moment and changes are needed throughout the squad.
This is not to say another right-back is top of the agenda, but if it’s a case of freshening up the squad, replacing Tavernier is probably a good place to start.
Every Gers fan will thank Tav for his years of service when the day does arrive for him to depart, and until then it is important supporters get behind him as he is never guilty of not giving 100 per cent for the club.
In other Rangers news, Gers chiefs should be ashamed following an admission made by Goldson.
