'I don't see him in the job' - Pundit view: Rangers fans to take action on Clement sack in weeks

Philippe Clement will likely lose his job at Rangers if he hasn’t improved things significantly before Christmas, according to Derek Ferguson.

The ex-Ibrox midfielder believes the Belgian will get a chance to defend the League Cup he won last season when he faces Celtic in his sixth Old Firm derby on 15 December, but if he fails to do so and continues to struggle in the league he will be sacked.

Clement, 50, has come under serious pressure from supporters after losing at Kilmarnock (20 October) and Aberdeen (30 October) to leave the Light Blues nine points adrift of the Dons and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

A dismal first-half performance in the League Cup semi against Motherwell on 3 November put him 45 minutes from the sack in the view of some observers [PLZ Soccer, 4 November], but a second-half fightback to book a place in the final, followed by a creditable 1-1 draw at Olympiacos in the Europa League, have provided a glimmer of hope.

However, Ferguson doesn’t believe it will last long if performances don’t improve significantly over the next five weeks, and a sixth derby from six without victory will call time on another Ibrox boss as the fans will simply stop turning up to support his side.

Rangers have seven games prior to the return to Hampden Park, starting with a visit from struggling Hearts on 10 November, but also have a daunting visit from Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham just three days before the final in what has been tipped to be a major problem [PLZ Soccer, 4 November].

Rangers fans to vote with their feet on Ibrox sack

Brendan Rodgers
Philippe Clement has yet to beat Brendan Rodgers as Rangers boss.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “He won the game on Sunday [2-1 vs Motherwell] and he needed that. He needed that breathing space. But if that level of performance continues up till the cup final, he’ll probably get the cup final now.

“But what I would say is if he doesn’t get that level of performance up to the cup final, and he doesn’t win the cup final, then I don’t see him in the job to be honest with you.

“Because the fans will vote with their feet, they’ll not turn up, even though they’ve paid their money, their season books. They’ll no turn up because they’ll no accept it, that’s for sure.

“The fans are not daft. The fans are not stupid. They know what they’re seeing, so they’re frustrated. It’s a big five weeks for the manager because if that performance doesn’t get up and he doesnae win that final then I don’t see him being at the club.
