Luca Williams-Barnet can make history for Tottenham if he features in the Europa League clash against Roma on Thursday night.
According to TBR Football [28 November], the 16-year-old has been training with the first team ahead of the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will become the club’s youngest ever play to take to the pitch if he features.
While Ange Postecoglou will be eager to avenge the 3-2 loss against Galatasaray last time out, the Spurs boss has proven he is not afraid to hand minutes to the youngsters in Europe and could make a record-breaking call with Williams-Barnet.
Luca Williams-Barnet is set for a monumental evening at Tottenham
Roma are in 12th place in Serie A and 20th place in the Europa League but are no pushovers by any stretch of the imagination.
Postecoglou should be commended for his work integrating the brightest academy prospects into the first team this year – and he could further nail down his stamp on academy development by handing Williams-Barnet minutes against Roma.
The youngster’s involvement will be subject to how the match plays out, of course, and while he is considered the “standout” star of the Under-18s Premier League, his inexperience will not be called upon if Tottenham are chasing the game on Thursday (28 November).
However, the forward has been a revelation for Stewart Lewis’s side, bagging 11 goals with a further five assists in 15 Under-18s Premier League appearances; he has become a key player for the side this year despite only turning 16 in October.
As the old saying goes, ‘If you are good enough, you are old enough,’ and Williams-Barnet is tearing up the academy division and is well deserving of his recent first-team involvement.
Whether his accelerated development results in an immediate first-team berth remains to be seen – Will Lankshear rewarded Postecoglou’s faith in him with a goal against Galatasaray but ultimately let his teammates down his dismissal in the second half.
It can truly go either way for Williams-Barnet if he makes an historic outing for Tottenham.
In other Tottenham news, Ange Postecoglou makes a transfer admission at Spurs after Guglielmo Vicario’s injury.
