Bryan King claims Tottenham could face a “stumbling block” as they prepare to appeal the ban handed to Rodrigo Bentancur by the Football Association.
The ex-Spurs scout believes the FA don’t like to admit when they are wrong, which could pose a problem for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
It was confirmed via the FA’s official website on Monday (18 November) that “An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview. “
It comes after the midfielder was charged by the FA in September for suggesting South Korean team-mate Son Heung-min and his cousins “all look the same” during an interview broadcast in Uruguay last June (via the Standard, 12 September).
As reported by the Telegraph (18 November), Spurs’ Premier League rivals are shocked by the severity of Bentancur’s punishment and the inconsistencies around it. As a result, Spurs plan to appeal the length of the suspension, which exceeded the minimum six games applied by the FA for racist abuse (via The Telegraph, 20 November).
And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – hopes Spurs are successful in their appeal.
“Spurs are appealing the length of this ban, and rightly so,” King said.
“However, I don’t think the FA like to admit that they are wrong. Therefore, I think that will prove to be a stumbling block for Tottenham in this appeal.
“Personally, I think a £100,000 fine would have been sufficient, without the need for a suspension as well. It was a mistake that Bentancur made. However, Son accepted his apology.
“As a result, I don’t see the need to stop him playing football. I’m hopeful that Spurs will be successful in their appeal, and that common sense prevails.”
Tottenham to be successful in appeal against Rodrigo Bentancur’s suspension?
It would be difficult to blame Spurs for trying their luck and appealing against the length of Bentancur’s suspension. However, whether or not they are successful in their appeal is a different story entirely.
While the club don’t plan to appeal the guilty verdict, which suggests they accept a punishment is fair, frustration has emerged over the timing and severity of the punishment.
Therefore, it is no surprise that Spurs are preparing to appeal.
In other Tottenham news, a verdict has been shared live on talkSPORT about the possibility of Paul Pogba joining the club.
