Tottenham are set to appeal the length of the ban Rodrigo Bentacur was handed by the FA for his racist remark about Son Heung-min, according to the Telegraph.
The news outlet reports [20 November] that the Lilywhites feel like they’ve been made an example of, and the Urugayan’s seven-match ban has shocked rivals.
Spurs aren’t arguing the guilty verdict but rather the severity of the punishment, with racist incidents warranting a punishment of a minimum of six games by the FA.
Tottenham need to work without Rodrigo Bentancur
Bentacur will undoubtedly be the first person to acknowledge that he made a mistake, and Tottenham will need to figure out a way to play without the 27-year-old in the upcoming weeks.
Ange Postecoglou has, at times, relied on the Uruguay international when he’s been available, primarily playing him in the holding midfield position.
Yves Bissouma is the other defensive option in the middle of the park at the Australian manager’s disposal, but the Malian hasn’t been at his best this season.
Postecoglou has tried a somewhat unorthodox approach in the current campaign, playing Dejan Kulusevski in the engine room and opening up space for an extra attacker in the starting lineup.
With the Swedish national, Spurs have found a new hero, although it has meant that the team aren’t as solid defensively, conceding 13 goals in the Premier League this season and managing just two clean sheets.
As things stand, Bentancur will miss the Lilywhites’ crucial games against the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.
While it might not be a convenient outcome, it’s one that the North Londoners can’t really complain about.
In other Tottenham news, the club’s stance on letting Archie Gray join Leeds United on loan has been suggested.
