'I Don't Want To See That Happen' - Ex-PL CEO reacts to 'big' Newcastle development

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted a multi-club network must be a “win-win” for everyone as Newcastle United’s owners explore takeover deals worldwide.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) must not “exploit” smaller clubs if they are brought into the organisation.

Football Insider revealed last week (13 June) that top-ranking PIF chiefs have jetted out to Brazil to sound out potential takeover opportunities.

It is believed that PIF, who own Newcastle and four top Saudi clubs, are also eager to acquire additional European clubs to bolster their network.

Man City’s City Football Group, which encompasses 10 clubs worldwide, have paved the way for other clubs to establish multi-club organisations.

Wyness has ‘big concern’ as Newcastle chiefs jet out on takeover business

Wyness insisted networks of clubs must be used for “footballing benefit”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The biggest concern is when you see the smaller clubs being exploited, and they’re just being used as an end for the bigger club.

“It genuinely has to be a win-win for every club in the network, with benefits from top to bottom – not just for the halo club at the top.

“When it’s just top down, that’s the issue.

“There has to be cohesiveness between the clubs, bringing in a culture of working together.

“It isn’t just about adding numbers and trying to engineer profit between clubs, it’s got to be for footballing benefit.

“If those things don’t happen, it can just be that the weakest clubs are exploited – I don’t want to see that happen.”
