Derek Ferguson has revealed that he was told Rangers defender Dujon Sterling is only able to play one game a week.
The English defender made his first start since September as the Light Blues drew 1-1 in the Europa League showdown with Olympiacos on Thursday (7 November) thanks to Cyriel Dessers’ second-half strike.
While the right-back could only manage 52 minutes of action before being replaced by Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Open Goal pundit Ferguson doesn’t think he is capable of playing a full game each and every week.
Speaking on the Open Goal YouTube channel (7 November, 41:15) he said: “I spoke to somebody probably about two months ago, he can’t play two games a week.
“He can’t play one game a week and now he can’t play 90 minutes. They don’t know how his fitness is, they don’t know how long he can play. I’m baffled.
“I got told that.”
What has happened to Rangers star Dujon Sterling at Ibrox?
Sterling’s position under Clement at Ibrox has become somewhat of a mystery over the opening weeks of the season.
The Englishman was one of the best performers under the Belgian in the second half of last year, starring in a number of different roles, but has been little more than a squad player this term.
While some have questioned the defender’s fitness, others have doubted his application and attitude in training. Ultimately, it seems more likely that his body simply isn’t allowing him to force his way into the starting XI regularly.
It is hard to be too critical of the versatile defender if that is the case, but you have to wonder why Rangers were so desperate to hand him a new contract so early on this season.
Hopefully, his impressive start and display against Olympiacos on Thursday was a sign that he has begun to turn a corner under Clement. It will be interesting to see how involved, if at all, the former Chelsea man is against Hearts on Sunday (10 November).
In other Rangers news, Cerny has been told that he looks like a “little boy” when he plays in the Scottish Premiership
