Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson has admitted he will have to manage the situation with certain players when asked about Rangers target Kwame Poku.
The Daily Record reported on 18 November that the Gers may look to sign the 23-year-old winger on a free transfer.
The English League One club will get compensated even if the Ghana international leaves on a free transfer.
Speaking to Posh TV as quoted by the Daily Record, Ferguson said: “We’ve had speculation about our players in all my time here.
“And I see it as a good thing because if no-one is talking about your players it means you’re not doing very well as a team. That speculation is only going to crank up in January and clearly I will have to manage the situation regarding certain players.
“I don’t think anything will happen with Kwame (Poku). We have a safety net with him and with Ricky (Jade Jones) as we would get compensation for both of them given their ages. I never go mad with signings in January, but we will look to recruit one player in one position and that will also depend on one other thing happening.”
Rangers must make opening moves to seal Kwame Poku transfer
Gers must now strategically position themselves to sign Poku by leveraging cross-border transfer rules, which would allow them to offer the player a pre-contract agreement in January when his contract with Peterborough United enters its final six months.
This move would enable the club to secure the 23-year-old’s services for a potentially minimal compensation fee, especially since Peterborough are assured of receiving compensation.
Given Ferguson’s acknowledgement of the speculation around Poku and his hint at managing player situations, the Ibrox outfit should also engage in direct talks with the player or his representatives to persuade him of the benefits of moving to Scotland.
This could involve highlighting the opportunity for European football, first-team opportunities and a platform to showcase his talents at a higher stage, all while ensuring a smooth transition for Poku.
The jump from England’s third tier to the Europa League and potentially challenging for the SPFL title may be too good to turn down.
