Ianis Hagi sent an emotional message to Rangers after Romania won 3-1 against Lithuania in the UEFA Nations League on Monday [9 September].
The 25-year-old has been training with the B-Team in Glasgow and is not expected to appear for the first team this season [Chris Jack] after failing to secure a summer exit.
Hagi spoke out about his situation with the Gers following his performance with the national team with Romanian news outlet ProSport [10 September] and shared he is willing to fight for his place in the side.
He said: “It’s all down to me, I know what I’ve been through for the last six weeks. I did the training with the second team, I did the physical training. Mister knows how much I pulled myself to be present here.
“This is my passion. I’m going back to Rangers, I have one year left on my contract there. I gave two public messages, everyone knows them.
“I love the club, I’m ready to fight for the fans, for what that huge club means in Europe. I’m there, I’m back, I’m fighting for the coach, for the team.
“They know who I am as a person, as a footballer. Tomorrow I go back to Glasgow and start all over again, I fight.”
Ianis Hagi is determined to return to the Rangers fold
While Philippe Clement was determined to force a permanent departure for Hagi throughout the summer [Sky Sports] transfer window an opportunity has emerged from the disappointment.
The 25-year-old was one on a long list of names on the chopping block at Rangers this summer, the wage-rise clause in his contract [Daily Record] provided an easy decision to make for the financially challenged Light Blues as he arrived back in Scotland after an underwhelming loan spell at Alaves last season.
However, after the humiliating 3-0 loss to Celtic at Parkhead, Clement could use players who want to fight for the badge. If Hagi is willing to put the summer behind him and work hard to force himself into the first team, it is a risk worth taking.
The gulf in class between themselves and their Scottish Premiership rivals was apparent in the Old Firm clash. The squad at the Light Blues is nowhere near good enough to challenge Celtic and with Europa League football to contend with this season, Hagi and Tom Lawrence fighting for the number 10 spot gives Clement the options he lacks.
Even if the plan is to offload Hagi in January, it is beneficial for all to welcome him back to the first team fold, should he perform for the Gers, his value will only rise and Clement can finally coup the big-money departure that the club craved all summer.
