Ibrox View: 5/10 is worry as 9/10 star lights up Hampden - Rangers player ratings v Ross County

Rangers picked up a second win of the Scottish Premiership season with a 6-0 thrashing of Ross County on Saturday 24 August.

Philippe Clement’s side dominated the visitors with their best performance of the season to move to the top of the league table ahead of Celtic’s clash with St Mirren on Sunday (25 August).

Braces for both Rabbi Matondo and Cyriel Dessers partnered with second-half strikes from Tom Lawrence and Danilo ensured that that the Light Blues head into next week’s Old Firm clash in excellent form.

Here’s how Ibrox News rated the players out of 10;

Jack Butland – 7

As he often does, the England international impressed between the two posts with a couple of excellent saves when he was called into action. He didn’t have loads to do but pulled off some big stops in important moments to keep the away side at arm’s length.

James Tavernier – 8

As he so often does in these sorts of games, the Gers skipper ventured forward repeatedly and carried a threat with his delivery. He didn’t have too much to do out of possession and that will surely be different against Celtic next week but he deserves credit once again.

John Souttar – 7

He may have had to play alongside a whole host of different defensive partners over the last couple of weeks, but the Scotland international has been reasonably consistent and was steady as ever again today. Didn’t have loads to do, but what he did, he dealt with excellently.

Leon Balogun – 5

On his return from injury, the veteran defender only lasted for around 45 minutes before picking up a new knock. Did what he had to do before he was withdrawn, but struggled in the air up against Jordan White at the top end of the field. It will be a worry if this injury record continues.

Jefte – 7

Rangers fans may have been frustrated watching Ridvan Yilmaz and Borna Barisic over the last few seasons, but Jefte has provided a refreshing presence at left-back. The Brazilian was so direct against County and posed a threat both in and out of possession. Yilmaz will have a fight to win back his shirt.

Dujon Sterling – 7

The Englishman was preferred to Mohamed Diomande in the middle of the park and while he didn’t do loads in possession, he was a menace without the ball. The Englishman repeatedly broke up play with some excellent tackles and added an extra element of bite to the midfield. If he can stay fit he will be a regular starter.

Connor Barron – 7

He may not be spraying passes in the same manner as Tavernier or Lawrence, but the 21-year-old is the steady presence the Gers need in the middle of the park. He maintained possession excellently and calmed things down with the ball at his feet.

Tom Lawrence – 8

Lawrence may not have always been the most popular figure at Rangers over the last few seasons, but this may have been his best display in a Light Blues shirt. A goal and assist before he was substituted as he posed a constant threat with and without the ball. He may not be Ianis Hagi or Todd Cantwell, but that performance was as good as anything they’ve mustered.

Vaclav Cerny – 7

Having been the quietest of the Light Blues’ frontline, the Gers loanee showed his quality by picking out Matondo for the Gers’ fifth goal after some excellent work out wide. He may not have been as electric as his partner out wide, but he still shone in attack.

Will Rabbi Matondo exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours?

Rabbi Matondo – 9

He may have been linked with a move away from Ibrox in the last few days, but Matondo shows that he still has a role to play in Glasgow this season. The winger was a menace throughout the clash at Hamdpen and deserved his goal. His work to lay on the assist for Dessers’ second was just as good as he broke away from the backline. He may not be most fans’ first choice out wide, but he is capable of moments of magic.

Cyriel Dessers – 9

The enigma of Hampden Park. Once again, there were plenty of moments where the forward’s link-up and hold-up play left a little to be desired, but when it came to finding the net he scored twice when it mattered. He isn’t perfect, but Dessers is quickly becoming one of the Gers’ most important players. Two more goals to the tally as he keeps getting better and some excellent work for Lawrence’s goal.

Substitutes:

Mohamed Diomande – 6

A decent display after he was dropped from the starting XI, but lacking that final bit of quality.

Kieran Dowell – 6

Danilo – 8

Great to see the Brazilian back on the scoresheet.

Robbie Fraser – 6

Ross McCausland – 6

In other Rangers news, a Rabbi Matondo revelation has left Si Ferry gobsmacked as he continues to be linked with an exit
