Neil McCann believes Mohamed Diomande made a “reckless” challenge on Michee Efete during Rangers’ 6-0 victory against Ross County on Saturday (24 August).
The 22-year-old came on as an early substitute for Philippe Clement’s side, replacing the injured Leon Balogun, but some may feel that the midfielder was lucky not to be cautioned within 15 minutes of being on the pitch.
Despite the negative note from Diomande, braces from Cyriel Dessers and Rabbi Matondo, and goals from Tom Lawrence and Danilo saw the Gers claim all three points at Hampden Park in their third match of the new Scottish Premiership campaign.
Speaking live via BBC Sportscene on Saturday (24 August, 4:10pm), McCann said: “It’s a bit reckless actually. He was side on there, it looks like he kind of lunged. He doesn’t make too much of a connection with Efete.”
Rangers claim important three points v Ross County
Following a tough few opening matches of the 2024/25 campaign, Clement and his side’s main priority will have been claiming all three points and rising to the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
Of course, that could very much change when Celtic face St Mirren on Sunday 25 August, but putting pressure on their Old Firm rivals before their meeting on Sunday 1 September could be vital.
Diomande is often involved in a controversial moment in a Gers shirt, having already picked up two yellow cards in the opening five matches in all competitions, and Clement may need to have a word.
The 22-year-old is becoming a vital part of the Light Blues’s squad, so the Belgian needs to make sure he reigns in some of his tougher tackles and remains on the pitch.
Clement probably would have hoped to keep Diomande on the bench for the full match, with the Celtic clash on the horizon, but he will still likely get his starting spot back at Celtic Park.
