Rangers appear to have reached an impasse in the transfer window this window and look set for further frustration in missing out on a sought-after free transfer.
Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse reported via X on 15 July that Callum O’Hare is about to sign a four-year Sheffield United contract after completing his medical earlier the same day.
He had previously reported the Light Blues’ interest in the then-Coventry City midfielder on 1 March as his contract was running down and clubs were sending scouts to watch him.
TBR Football reported on 27 April that Burnley were in pole position to sign the 26-year-old while Rangers and Celtic were both still in the race.
Sheffield United to sign Rangers target after Coventry exit
But it is the Blades who appear to have won the race to strike another blow to Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen this summer.
After bringing in a raft of promising youngsters early in the window the headline activity appears to have dried up at Ibrox with the manager now going public with the need to sell to buy [Rangers Review, 13 July].
High-profile senior players have been linked with exits but deals have yet to be agreed to move on forwards such as Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers, or long-term defensive leaders James Tavernier and Connor Goldson.
Todd Cantwell has also been tipped to leave Rangers this summer [Chris Jack, 3 July] and O’Hare may have been an ideal replacement in the attacking midfield role after 10 goals and four assists in all competitions last term.
He was prominent in Coventry’s FA Cup run which was controversially ended by Manchester United at Wembley in the semi-final after a late winner was ruled out for a marginal offside and can also play in a deeper midfield role.
Philippe Clement admits Rangers have to sell to buy
Clement and Koppen have been looking to add an experienced midfielder alongside former Aberdeen youngster Connor Barron and appeared to be closing in on Kenny McLean from Norwich [Jonny McFarlane, 1 July].
That deal has seemingly ground to a halt but an approach has been made to Swiss champions Young Boys over Cheikh Niasse [Gianluigi Longari, 13 July].
Either way O’Hare won’t be heading to Glasgow as transfer rivals Sheffield United are set to get their man at a time when discomfort is growing around the Light Blues’ situation.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are said to now be “supremely hopeful” after the latest update on the Ibrox mess after Clement was left blindsided.
