Rangers would have to accept an offer of £20million for Jack Butland despite Philippe Clement’s stance on his goalkeeper, Derek Clark has said.
Speaking with Joshua Barrie on the Rangers Review (15 July), Clark shared his worry that Clement could be blindsided if Butland is sold for a sizeable fee this summer, having stated the goalkeeper is not for sale (Daily Record, 14 July).
Both Barrie and Clark agreed that regardless of Clement’s stance on Butland’s Ibrox future, if a huge fee were to be received for Butland then it would be difficult for the board to reject.
Clark said: “He’s backing himself into a corner a little bit, because if an offer came in of what, £20million for Jack Butland? I think Rangers would have to take that.”
Barrie replied: “£20million? That will be hard to turn down, but you’re right, he is very much putting himself in a certain position in that he does not want Butland to go.“
Jack Butland transfer could assist in Rangers squad rebuild
While even collecting a fee of £20m for Butland may be something that Clement doesn’t want to entertain this summer, it’s undoubtedly an amount that the Gers board would be foolish to turn down.
Clement’s overhauling of the existing Ibrox squad is well underway in the transfer window, with six incomings and outgoings respectively already as Clement looks to reign in the gap to rivals Celtic.
But there has been a suggestion from Clement himself that sales will be needed if he wants to spend to improve his squad and that is where the difficulty may regarding Butland.
If a huge offer were to come in, and it would need to be a huge offer, would there be a temptation to cash in and use the money to strengthen the rest of the squad?
Clement certainly won’t want to have to replace his number one goalkeeper at short notice, but in order to refresh the playing stocks in almost every other position, Butland may be the player who makes way.
