Ibrox View: Celtic to take leaf out of Rangers book to bring new fight to SPFL

Celtic have followed in Rangers’ footsteps after rejecting an SPFL contract to hand TV rights to Premier Sports to show 20 live games.

The Gers’ Old Firm rivals have opted out of an agreement with the league organisers and the Irish broadcaster who wanted the right to show two additional games from any Premiership stadium [Daily Mail].

This isn’t the first time that one of the Hoops or the Light Blues have rejected a commercial agreement from the SPFL.

This saw a dispute arise with Park’s Motor Group over a title sponsorship which was only resolved last year after an apology and the payment of compensation.

Celtic are seemingly following in the footsteps of their rival, a deal has been turned down after being offered £75,000 for every additional home game and a maximum payment of £150,000 for two.

This would be a positive addition to the cash flow for the Champions League outfit but they have put their supporters first.

The club’s hierarchy were reluctant to inconvenience season-ticket holders and travelling fans by altering more 3pm Saturday kick-offs to a later time.

It is certainly a bold decision to reject an easy payday but putting fans first is something that not enough clubs do anymore.

It seems clear that a decision has been made against the SPFL in a similar fashion to how the Gers did last year given the power that the Old Firm clubs have in the league.

There is plenty to appreciate from the Hoops as themselves and the Light Blues understand their value to the Scottish Premiership.
