Ibrox View: Clement has to put faith in new star after Rangers breakthrough v FCSB

Hamza Igamane replacing Cyriel Dessers to score his first Rangers goal against FCSB on Thursday (24 October) signals a changing of the guard at Ibrox.

Dessers’ substitution early in the second half after picking up an eye injury left the striker fuming [David Edgar, 24 October], but it opened the door to give Igamane a chance in the 4-0 win.

Philippe Clement’s side were already three up at the time of his introduction, and Igamane took just 14 minutes to get his name on the scoresheet after some good work from Connor Barron.

The 21-year-old Moroccan’s darting run towards the box saw him skilfully stand up his marker before finding the bottom corner, and that’s exactly the kind of strikers’ play the Gers have lacked of late.

Cyriel Dessers must pass torch to Hamza Igamane at Rangers

Dessers undoubtedly remains Clement’s go-to pick at centre-forward despite the arrival of Igamane in the summer and Danilo taking big steps on the way back from his latest injury setback.

After opening the season with seven goals in his first 10 games, Dessers is now scoreless in the last five, once again raising questions over which player is best suited to the number nine role at Ibrox.

A first goal for Igamane after his £1.7million transfer from FAR Rabat will be seen as the first of many for the hopeful Ibrox faithful, and it was a goal which generally hasn’t been in Dessers’ attacking arsenal.

At just 21, Igamane is unlikely to be thrown in straight at the deep end barring complications with Dessers’ eye injury, but the fashion in which he finished his chance shows Clement exactly what he’s missing.

Igamane was undoubtedly signed as one for the future as one of several new faces through the doors this summer, but with the Gers looking to build on this 4-0 victory, the future could be here already.
