Rangers fans will be growing increasingly frustrated with Cyriel Dessers despite his return to form over the past week.
Speaking on The Rangers Review (12 November), Stevie Clifford said that following Dessers’ equalising goal against Olympiacos on 7 November, he’d been told something which rang true.
Dessers scoring seven goals in his first nine matches of the season, then undergoing on an eight-game drought before netting in each of his last three, makes Gers fans’ frustrations no surprise whatsoever.
Clifford said: “Somebody said to me regarding Cyriel Dessers in Greece – he was the reason why we got a point and the reason why we didn’t get all three – which I think’s quite an apt description for him.”
Rangers would be streets ahead with a consistent Cyriel Dessers
Scoring at a rate of one goal every two games is a respectable output for any forward, but with Dessers’ strikes coming in fits and starts throughout a frustrating early-season period, the Light Blues need more.
The Nigerian’s patchy form hasn’t been enough to earn him an international recall, and despite his eight-game goal drought coinciding with the Gers’ domestic performances taking a turn for the worse.
Philippe Clement has become no stranger to pressure during this period, yet still retains faith in Dessers as his leading man up front, with the number nine starting all but three of their 20 matches so far.
A lack of credible alternatives is the main cause for this over-reliance on the 29-year-old despite Hamza Igamane showing glimpses of his potential, with Danilo still being nursed back into first-team contention.
Therefore, for the time being at least, it appears to be Dessers or bust for Clement’s side as they look to turn their form around, and fans will hope that this scoring streak continues for longer than the last one.
In other Rangers news, Michael Stewart questioned the mental toughness of the squad at Ibrox after their win over Hearts.
