Ibrox View: Rangers could make Philippe Clement sack decision now after what he said

Rangers could decide to sack Philippe Clement soon after what he said before losing 1-0 to Kilmarnock on Sunday (19 October).

Speaking on commentary for BBC Sportsound (19 October) after the shock defeat, Stephen McGinn highlighted Clement’s comments saying that October would show what the “real Rangers” are made of.

So far, October has seen the Gers suffer huge losses to Lyon and Kilmarnock, either side of a win over St Johnstone, and if that truly is the “real” version of his team, Clement will be fearing for his job.

McGinn said: “Philippe Clement told us after some of the disappointments earlier in the season – you’ll see the real Rangers in October, November.

“This is October and I’ve not seen Rangers worse than this.”

October hasn’t been Clement’s month, and after the Light Blues missed the chance to close the gap on Aberdeen and Celtic at the top, the Belgian’s position in the dugout will surely be questioned.

A run of four wins and four clean sheets in a row was brought to a devastating halt by Lyon at the start of the month, as the Ligue 1 side ran riot at Ibrox, profiting from some questionable defending to win 4-1.

Getting back to winning ways against St Johnstone – who they’d already beaten in the League Cup – was the least fans could have asked of Clement’s side, but even in that run, they never looked convincing.

Any Ibrox manager is judged on their results and performances in the biggest of games, and in the big games so far this season against Lyon and Celtic, the Light Blues have been several miles off the pace.

Tougher tests in the coming weeks take Gers to table-topping Aderbeen, as well as Olympiacos and Nice in Europe, and unless Clement comes away from those grounds with points, his job will be on the line.
