John Fleck remains a free agent who Rangers would be wise to sign after their 3-0 horror show against Celtic on Sunday 1 September.
On 31 August, the Daily Record listed Fleck as one of nine free agents who the Gers could pursue a deal for after the transfer window closed, and it could prove to be an ideal move for Philippe Clement’s side.
Fleck has reportedly been training at Auchenhowie since leaving Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season [Daily Record, 3 August], and having failed to find a deal elsewhere, could make a sensational return to his hometown club.
Clement had been keen to add an experienced central midfielder to his squad after some high-profile departures this summer, and with Fleck still on the market, could do just that despite the window closing.
John Fleck signing can solve underlying issue in Rangers midfield
The first-team squad at Ibrox has undergone massive changes at Ibrox this summer, with 13 players heading out the doors and a further 11 being signed, with eight of these being on permanent transfers.
Other than Mohamed Diomande, whose loan move from FC Nordsjaelland became permanent at the start of the summer, only Connor Barron has been brought in as an option in central midfield.
With John Lundstram, Ryan Jack and Jose Cifuentes all leaving the club, the former duo on free transfers themselves, there is an argument that the Gers are still short in this area of the pitch.
A high-profile pursuit of 32-year-old Kenny McLean from Norwich City came to nothing [Norwich Evening News, 20 July], and if a veteran Scottish international is still on the menu for Clement, Fleck could very much fit the bill.
Barron has impressed in the first few games of his Gers career, but with a void of experience in midfield and a UEFA home-grown quota to meet, adding Fleck to the squad – if only as a rotational option – could be a smart move for Clement and the club to make.
In other Rangers news, the financial details behind Samuel Edozie’s failed loan move from Southampton to Ibrox have been revealed.
