Ibrox View: Rangers may have found perfect Tavernier successor after recent transfer news

Rangers may have already found their perfect James Tavernier successor in Wrexham ace Ryan Barnett after recent rumours linking him with an Ibrox switch.

The Englishman has been with the Red Dragons for a few seasons now and has recently started to develop into a stellar talent, so it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to see him linked with a move to Glasgow [Rangers News, 13 November].

It’s been clear for some time now that Tavernier’s time with Rangers is coming to an end and, even though he didn’t want to leave in the summer, both Dujon Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo have recently forced him out of the starting XI.

Sterling is the most likely successor for the 33-year-old, of course, but the addition of Barnett would help provide more cover for the role and create a bit of a tussle between the two for a starting spot.

Rangers should sign Ryan Barnett to replace James Tavernier

The defender initially started his career out as a midfielder but has been transformed into a right-back who can more than hold his own.

Barnett has helped Wrexham keep eight clean sheets already this term and has started all but one league fixture for Phil Parkinson’s men.

His name may not seem that exciting to Gers’ fans but the fact he’s only 25 years old should help pique interest.

Of course, there’s also the off-chance of Clement making Kasanwirjo’s stay permanent upon the end of his loan spell but, with the way he’s performing at the moment, it’s starting to feel less and less likely that the Gers will even be able to afford him.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Tavernier, but in the eyes of many it’s clear that he’s on borrowed time in Glasgow.

In other Rangers news, Andy Newport has shared the likelihood of the Gers making any permanent additions in January.
