Keith Jackson doesn’t believe Philippe Clement had nothing to do with the exit of Connor Goldson from Rangers in the summer.
The defender was sold to Aris Limassol for around £1.4million [The Rangers Review] and Robin Propper was brought in to fill in the gap left by the Englishman.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Record at the weekend [17 November], Goldson suggested his exit was down to a behind-the-scenes figure at Ibrox, rather than Clement directly.
However, speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (17 November), journalist Jackson said: “I’m interested about when he says it wasn’t Clement who made that decision [to let him go].
“The information we were getting before the end of last season was that Clement was going to change the leadership group,” he said.
“That suggests to me that Clement did make that decision/ Whether or not he was the guy that fronted up and told Connor Goldson that that was his decision, that’s another thing entirely.
“As far as I can see, moving into the summer, I fully expected Connor Goldson to leave because Philippe Clement had made it clear to the guys on the recruitment side that he wanted a new leadership group.”
Did Rangers make the right decision by letting Connor Goldson leave?
The sale of Goldson brought up many questions within the Rangers fanbase due to the impact he had on the club during his six-year stint.
Granted, he may not have had the best season in 2023/24, but it still feels like more could have come from him.
The Gers’ defence has once again been a problem area this term due to the poor performances of both James Tavernier and Robin Propper.
The latter of the two was brought in as Goldson’s replacement, with Clement likely expecting the Dutchman to fill the leadership gap left by the Englishman’s departure.
Unfortunately, that’s been far from the case. The centre-back is now being pipped to a first-team spot by Leon Balogun, which says all you need to know about the successfulness of his transfer.
These are all ifs, buts and maybes, of course, but if Goldson stayed at Ibrox this season, things may have panned out differently for the Gers.
In other Rangers news, Andy Newport has named who the “obvious choice” to take over from Philippe Clement at Ibrox would be.
